Learning to Choose Yourself Without Feeling Selfish

In life, many people are taught to always think about others first. From a young age, we hear things like “Don’t be selfish” or “Always put others before yourself.” While caring for others is important, constantly ignoring our own needs can sometimes make us feel tired, stressed, and emotionally drained. That is why learning to choose yourself sometimes is also very important.

Many students and young people struggle with this feeling. When they want to take a break, say no, or focus on their own goals, they often feel guilty. They may think that choosing themselves means they are being selfish. But the truth is, taking care of yourself does not mean you do not care about others. For example, a student might agree to help everyone, attend every plan, or take on too many responsibilities just to avoid disappointing others. Over time, this can become exhausting. Learning to choose yourself means understanding your limits. It means realizing that it is okay to say no sometimes. Saying no does not make you a bad person; it simply means you are protecting your time, energy, and mental peace. When you respect your own boundaries, others are also more likely to respect them.
